Upcoming Changes to Foam Fire Extinguishers – What You Need to Know

If you use foam fire extinguishers, you may have heard about some upcoming changes aimed at improving environmental safety. These changes involve the gradual phase-out of certain chemicals known as PFAS (Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances), which have traditionally been used in foam extinguishers. Here’s a straightforward summary to help you stay informed and prepared.

What Are PFAS and Why Are They Being Phased Out?

PFAS are a group of chemicals known for their durability—they don’t break down easily in the environment and can pose long-term risks. Some of these chemicals, like PFOA and PFOS, were banned from fire extinguishers years ago. While current foam extinguishers no longer contain these substances, they do include another PFAS chemical, PFHxA, which is now under scrutiny.

Both the UK and EU are moving toward stricter regulations on PFHxA due to its environmental impact. If adopted, these changes will lead to the eventual prohibition of foam extinguishers containing PFAS by 31st December 2030.

What’s Changing?

Here’s what to expect:

  • Shorter Lifespans for Foam Extinguishers from 2025: Foam extinguishers purchased after 1st January 2025 will not have the usual five-year lifespan, as they’ll need to align with new regulations sooner.
  • Gradual Phase-Out of PFAS-Containing Extinguishers: Many extinguisher manufacturers, including our key supply partners, are already transitioning to compliant alternatives.

What Are the Alternatives?

The next generation of extinguishers will include:

These alternatives will provide the same level of fire protection without the environmental concerns.

What Does This Mean for You?

If you’re planning to purchase or replace extinguishers in the near future, it’s worth considering these changes:

  • Foam extinguishers will soon transition to PFAS-free options.
  • Your fire safety provider can guide you in selecting the right extinguishers to suit your needs and ensure compliance with emerging legislation.

We’re committed to making this transition as seamless as possible. Alongside our supply chain partners, we’ll keep you updated and ensure you continue to meet industry standards, insurance requirements, and fire safety needs.
