Your Guide on Where To Put Fire Signage

Fire signage plays a critical role in ensuring the safety of the people in your building and your compliance with the law.

But it’s not enough to simply buy the signs — you also need to know where to put them.

Appropriate placement for fire safety signage can be tricky to navigate if you have a large building or if you’re overwhelmed by the range of signs. That’s why this month at Fire Safety Equipment, we’re going to highlight various signs and where they should be positioned.

Where To Put Fire Signage (1)

Fire Action Signs

  • Purpose: Fire action signs give your building’s occupants clear instructions on what action to take in the event of an emergency.
  • Placement: Fire action signs should be placed in key locations such as entrances, communal areas and by fire alarm call points to ensure they are visible and accessible to all.

Fire Equipment Signs

  • Purpose: Fire equipment signs indicate the location of essential fire fighting equipment such as extinguishers, fire blankets and hoses.
  • Placement: Fire equipment signs should be placed adjacent to or above the equipment they identify, making them visible from a distance without obstruction.

Fire Extinguishers Signs

  • Placement: Fire extinguisher signs should be mounted above every extinguisher in your building, preferably at eye level, to make it easy to find the correct equipment.

Assembly Point Signs

  • Purpose: Assembly point signs direct people to the nearest, designated assembly area in the event of an evacuation of the building.
  • Placement: Assembly point signs should be positioned at your predetermined assembly point outside the building, preferably large, wide open spaces, making them visible to everyone when they exit.

Fire Door Signs

  • Purpose: Fire door signs identify which doors are fire doors and remind people to keep them closed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke.
  • Placement: Fire door signs should be affixed to both sides of the door, within eye level, with instructions matched to the specific type of door.

Fire Exit Signs

  • Purpose: Fire exit signs guide people to the nearest fire exit in the event of an emergency for a smooth, safe exit.
  • Placement: Fire exit signs should be positioned along your escape routes. This includes above exit doors and where there are changes in direction. Signs should also be visible in low lighting.

Regularly review your fire signage

We recommend that you regularly review and maintain your fire signage so that you remain compliant with regulations in the UK. This will help you spot whether your signs are still effective or if they are missing, allowing you to replace them as necessary.

We previously covered the rules on fire signage in the UK and showed some of the consequences of inaction – read more here.
